Who We Are
He waka eke noa — we are all in this together.
Honohono Tātou Katoa follows the Compassionate City Charter and a public health palliative care approach, recognising that caring for one another through caregiving, death, loss, and grief is something communities, whānau, and services do together.

Honohono Tātou Katoa
is a community‑led charitable trust working alongside whānau and hapori to strengthen connection, care, and belonging.
We are part of a compassionate communities movement that understands wellbeing as something created together — through relationships, shared responsibility, and collective care. Grounded in whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and kotahitanga, we support communities to respond to loneliness and to journey together through caregiving, death, loss, and grief.
Rather than delivering services to communities, we work with communities — recognising their knowledge, cultural practices, and lived experience as strengths. We walk alongside people to build confidence, connection, and preparedness, so care is shared and no one feels alone.

Our Vision
We create and connect compassionate communities, where all people are included with belonging and purpose throughout their lives.
Our Mission
Working together to reduce loneliness and build whānau and community preparedness for death, loss, and grief.
Our Values
At the heart of Compassionate Communities, we hold these values to guide how we work together and support one another:
-
Compassion – We lead with care, love, and support for all.
-
Respect – We honour each person’s dignity, voice, and autonomy.
-
Curiosity – We stay open-minded, flexible, and eager to learn.
-
Creativity – We welcome fresh ideas and joyful, new ways of doing things.
-
Integrity – We act with honesty, responsibility, and transparency.
-
Patience – We act with grace, endure with strength, and honour each person’s pace
From Seed to Community
Honohono Tātou Katoa began as a feasibility project within Mercy Hospice, exploring how communities could be more supported and involved in care, dying, and bereavement. Over time, this kaupapa grew beyond organisational boundaries and has now become an independent charitable trust — shaped by, and accountable to, the communities it serves.
Today, we are a community‑led organisation, from the community, for the community. We support whānau and hapori to strengthen compassionate communities by reducing loneliness and building preparedness for caregiving, death, loss, and grief.
Grounded in whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and kotahitanga, our approach centres on creating safe and inclusive spaces where people from diverse cultures and backgrounds can have honest, open conversations about life, death, and loss. We honour community knowledge, lived experience, and cultural practices, recognising these as sources of strength and wisdom.
Through accessible education, community‑led initiatives, partnerships, and systems change, we support communities to navigate the journey before, during, and after death with dignity, choice, and belonging. Guided by the Compassionate City Charter and a public health palliative care approach, we see communities as equal partners in care — walking together so no one has to face these experiences alone.
